The Logos/Word is the Mind of the Father, John 1:1
The common Greek word for “word” that appears in the New Testament Scriptures more than three hundred times is “logos”. Logos literally means someone’s “expressed thought”, someone’s “reason” or someone’s “intelligence” that is expressed in words. In fact, “logos” is where we get our English word “logic” from.
Even some of the Semi-Arian founding fathers of the Trinity believed that the only true God (the Father) pre-created all things through His own Word, Reason, and Intelligence that later became the Son.
Tertullian (190-225) wrote in AGAINST PRAXEUS CHAPTER 6
“Now, as soon as it pleased God to put forth into their respective substances and forms the things which He had planned and ordered within Himself, in conjunction with His Wisdom's Reason and Word, He first put forth the Word Himself, having within Him His own inseparable Reason and Wisdom, in order that all things might be made through Him through whom they had been planned and disposed, yea, and ALREADY MADE, so far forth as (they were) IN THE MIND AND INTELLIGENCE OF GOD.”
In a similar way that architects first create detailed blueprints from their own reason, mind, and intelligence before expressing it on paper, so God the Father first created his own detailed plan before the world was actually created. Tertullian himself, an early third century Semi-Arian writer, admitted that the Word (logos) was the Father's own Reason, Word, Mind, and Intelligence in which God the Father “ALREADY MADE” all things “THROUGH WHOM THEY HAD BEEN PLANNED”. However, Tertullian erred when he wrote that the Father later “put forth the Word Himself as a pre-incarnate Son” (Arianism) when God said, “Let there be light” in Genesis 1:3.
Theophilus of Antioch (169-185) was another early Semi-Arian teacher who believed that the logos of the Father was the Father’s own mind and thought before being created as a pre-incarnate Arian Son.
“…as truth expounds, the Word that always exists, residing within the heart of God. For before anything came into being he had him as a counsellor, being his own mind and thought. But when God wished to make all that he determined on, he begot His Word, uttered the firstborn of all creation …” Apology to Autolycus, Book 2, 22
Theophilus and the early Semi-Arian writers taught that the impersonal Word (Logos) of the Father always existed within the heart of God and that “before anything came into being he had him as a counsellor, being HIS (the Father’s) OWN MIND AND THOUGHT”. “But when God wished to make ALL THAT HE DETERMINED, He begot His Word (gave birth to “His own mind and thought”)” by uttering “the firstborn of all creation”. Theophilus clearly taught that the Word (logos) was the Father’s “own mind and thought” before the Father allegedly “begat His Word” by uttering the Son as “the firstborn of all creation”.
Where did Theophilus (an early second century teacher) get the idea that the Word (logos) is the eternal “mind and thought” of God the Father that was begotten later on in time? Theophilus’ spin on the impersonal logos (word) that later became personal likely came from the early Modalists who were the majority of believers at that time (see Tertullian, Against Praxeus, Chapter 3). The theology of Theophilus and other Semi-Arians at that time differed from the Modalists in that the Semi-Arians taught that the Son was begotten (born) twice (once before the incarnation and again in the incarnation). In contradistinction, the Modalists also taught that the Son impersonally pre-existed in the Father’s heart as “His own mind and thought” which served as His own Wisdom and Council (Ephesians 1:11) before being made flesh by being born once as the living breathing Messiah who was granted a distinct human “life in himself” (John 5:26; Heb. 2:17). Hence, just as the Son of God was not literally slain twice, as “the Lamb slain from the creation of the world” (Rev. 13:8), so the Son of God was not literally born twice as “the firstborn of all creation” either. Therefore, the Son of God was already slain and born in the prophetic utterances of God (Logos = God’s Reason, Mind, and Intelligent plan expressed in words) before the world was literally created.
Take a closer look at the teaching of Theophilus and you will find that he also taught the Oneness Pentecostal view that the Word (Logos) was the impersonal mind and thought of the Father that served as His own Wisdom and Council before the “foreknown” Son was actually begotten (1 Peter 1:20, Hebrews 1:5, Psalm 2:7).

But when God (the Father) wished to make all that he determined on, he begot His Word, uttered the firstborn of all creation …” Apology to Autolycus, Book 2, 22
According to Theophilus, God the Father used His impersonal word (logos), “being His own MIND and THOUGHT”, to plan out what He pre-“determined on” before the Son was actually begotten. Theophilus obviously knew that the Greek word “logos” meant the Father’s own “mind and thought”, so Theophilus and the Semi-Arians did not believe in a coeternal Trinity. Therefore it is reasonable to conclude that the Greek word “logos” as used in John 1:1 (“In the beginning was the word/logos) proves that the Son of God existed as a Son within God’s own predetermined plan before the foundation of the world (1 Peter 1:20).
The Greek word “logos” is a very common word used throughout the New Testament which never means a person. For example, Luke 3:2 states that “THE WORD (LOGOS) OF GOD came to John” the Baptist. The word (logos) of God that came to John the Baptist was clearly God’s expressed message rather than another divine person distinct from Himself. Revelation 19:13 states that Jesus’ name shall be called, “THE LOGOS OF GOD”. Not God the Logos, but “the logos OF God”. The word “of” proves that Jesus is the Logos of God the Father rather than being a distinct God the word or God the logos person within himself.
LOGOS simply means “the expressed thought” of the only true God the Father
The Greek text in John 1:1 says, “In the beginning was the word, and the word (logos) “was with God”. The words, “Was with God” are translated from the original Greek words, “Pros Ton Theon” which are correctly translated as “pertaining to God” in Heb. 5:1 and Hebrews 2:17. “Pros ton theon” is translated as “pertaining to God” or “relating to God” in Hebrews 5:1 and in Hebrews 2:17, but not in John 1:1. Hence, the “word/logos” pertains to God because the words “pros ton theon” in John 1:1 show that the word/logos that “was with God” also pertains to God in a similar way that the word/logos of a man pertains to himself (Heb. 5:1 and Heb. 2:17).
The Greek word “logos” is used in the New Testament more than 300 times, and in every case it always means the expressed thoughts of an individual rather than a specific individual himself. The word “mind” for “logos” also appears in the lexicons because thoughts come from minds. Hence, the heretical word (logos) of Hymenaeus and Philetus which would “eat like gangrene” in 2 Tim. 2:17, stands for the expressed heretical thoughts of these two men rather distinct word persons other than themselves.
No Trinitarian has ever been able to find a single example where the Greek word “logos” ever actually means a person within the Greek New Testament because the Greek word “logos” literally means “the expressed thought” of a person rather than a distinct person from himself.
Hence, the “Divine Expression” of God was clearly God the Father's own “Divine Expression” (Logos) proceeding from His own mouth (Proverbs 2:6, Psalm 33:6). Therefore, the Bible teaches that the “divine expression” of God the Father’s future “FOREKNOWN” Son was already conceived in God’s prophetic mind “BEFORE THE CREATION OF THE WORLD (1 Peter 1:20)”. That is why Revelation 13:8 states that the “Lamb” was already “slain from THE FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD”. The words, “from the foundation of the world” in Revelation 13:8, hold the same essential meaning as Christ's words, “before the world was” in John 17:5 and John 17:24. Therefore Jesus had predestined glory as God the Father's “Divine Expression” before the world was actually created. For God's elect were also “chosen in HIM (Christ) before the creation of the world (Ephesians 1:4)”.
The literal meaning of the Greek word “logos” means the “expressed thoughts” of an individual. Trinitarians claim that the word (logos) of God is not a thought of God, but is a Divine Person. Yet there is nothing in the Greek word “logos” to show that logos can actually mean a person.
The Wycliffe Bible Encyclopedia, Moody Press, Chicago, IL, Volume 2 pages 1046-1047 states,
“Many scholars have argued that the apostle John had this philosophical development (of the Greek philosophical LOGOS) in the back of his mind when he wrote the prologue to his Gospel and that he actually tried to impart some of these (Greek Philosophical) concepts. For a long time many have contended that the background of the fourth Gospel was essentially Hellenistic rather than Hebraic. In dealing with such an assertion we may note that studies in the Dead Sea scrolls have tended to confirm the traditional conservative position that the cultural orientation of the Gospel of John was Hebraic. Moreover, we must observe that John was a simple fisherman from Palestine … there is no evidence that he imbibed any Greek pagan philosophical orientation in John Chapter 1. If he intended to be philosophical in the first few verses, he certainly was not anywhere else. We may argue that John used the word ‘logos’ in its ordinary meaning”.
Trinitarians need to seriously consider the fact that the Greek word Logos simply means “thoughts” which are “gathered together in the mind” of a person and then “expressed in words” (See Thayer’s Greek Lexicon under logos). An alleged God the Word Person could not have literally existed throughout eternity past as an alleged God the Thought Person. For if the logos of God was a distinct person beside God, then the literal meaning of the Greek word “logos” would point to a "God the Expressed Thought Person" distinct from the Father. Most Trinitarians fail to see how ridiculous it is to think that God’s thoughts could be a distinct God the thought person distinct from Himself.
The precise word order in the original Greek text of John 1:1 states, “… and the word (logos) was with God (pros ton theon) and theos (God) was the word (logos)”.
The natural reading of the text states that the word was with God (the Father) and that God (the same Father) was the word. It is hard to imagine that the first use of the word “God” would be any different from the second use of “God” within the context of John 1:1. So the natural reading of the text would lead readers to believe that the word was with God the Father and God the Father was that word which belonged to Himself.
The Interpreter's Dictionary, Volume 4 [pages 870-871] proves that the word of God in the Hebrew and Greek texts can be interpreted to describe God’s “whole plan and purpose for mankind”.
The Interpreter's Dictionary , Volulme 4 pages 870-871 says,
“The word of God is used of … God's revealed will, or HIS WHOLE PLAN AND PURPOSE FOR MANKIND ...”
Even some Trinitarian scholars admit that the plain meaning of the WORD of God is God’s “will, or His whole plan and purpose for mankind” rather than an alleged God the Word Person. How could God’s plan and purpose for mankind be called a distinct God the Word Person as a God the Plan and God the Purpose Person? This is what Trinitarians are alleging when they say that the Word of God is a distinct Person beside Himself!
Jesus’ Logos Is The Father’s Logos
Jesus affirmed that his word is the Father’s word (logos) in John 17:17, “Your word (logos) is truth”. Jesus further declared that his word (logos) was not his, but the Father’s word (logos), “… the word (logos) which you hear is NOT MINE, BUT THE FATHER’S” (John 14:24). If Jesus has always existed as an alleged coequal and coeternal God the Word Person, why then did he never claim that he himself is his own distinct Word Person?
Revelation 19:13 states that Jesus as the Son of God is called, “THE WORD (LOGOS) OF GOD”. The words, “logos OF God”, prove that Jesus does not possess his own Divine Word/Logos, because he is the “expressed thought” as “the logos OF” God the Father Himself. In like manner, John 14:23-24 proves that Jesus' word (the Greek word logos is used twice) is not really his own word (logos) but the word (logos) OF THE FATHER. It is in this sense that Revelation 19:13 calls name of Christ, "the Logos OF God" the Father.
