“I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him. And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him.” Daniel 7:13-14
Most Trinitarian scholars admit that the title “Son of man” is a post incarnational title for the man Christ Jesus who was born of a woman. For Jesus as a child born and son given was born of mankind via his virgin conception and birth through his human mother. Since Jesus as the Son of man did not actually receive dominion and glory over all “nations” and “languages” when Daniel saw this vision, we know that this was a prophetic vision of the future glory that Jesus will receive when he reigns over all peoples, nations, and languages of the earth. Since God “...calls things that are not as though they were” (Romans 4:17 NIV), we can see how Jesus was already given glory in the mind and plan of God before he actually received that glory. This is that glory that Jesus spoke of when he said, “... the glory which I had with you before the world was” created in John 17:5, as Jesus already had glory because he was already given that glory before his birth in the prophetic mind and plan of God the Father (the logos of John 1:1, “In the beginning was the word”) before he will actually receive that glory and dominion over all the earth.
Moreover, Jesus is spoken of as “The Son of MAN” in Daniel 7:13. The scriptures speak of Jesus as the Son of man in Daniel 7 because he was not actually born as a Son of man until the fullness of time had come (Gal. 4:4 - ESV, “But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of a woman, born under the law” – The Son was clearly “sent forth” after he was “born of a woman”). Since Jesus as a son was conceived and born from his mother Mary as the son of human ancestry, we know that the title “Son of man” used in the Hebrew Scriptures proves that this was a prophetic night vision that Daniel received about a future event in which the risen Christ would receive all authority from his Father to rule and reign over the earth with a rod of iron. For if Jesus literally existed as a Son of Man in heaven before his virgin birth then Trinitarians should also call Jesus a pre-incarnate God the Man.
Daniel 7:13-14 is yet another example of Messianic prophecy where God thinks and speaks as if Christ was already given the kingdoms of the world before they will actually be given to him. For just as Jesus was already spoken of as, “the lamb slain from the creation of the world” (Revelation 13:8) before he was actually slain, so Jesus was already spoken of as having glory and dominion before he would actually receive it after being born of a woman and subsequently ascending into heaven before the Father who is called the Ancient of Days in Daniel 7:13. It is interesting that only God the Father is called “the Ancient of Days” while the risen Son is called “the Son of man” as a newly created son of mankind via his virgin conception and birth through Mary. Therefore, Jesus as a Son of man could not have timelessly existed as a Son of man because only God the Father is called “Ancient” while the Son had his beginning by his virgin begetting.
